#2 gets my vote as most effective, because the subtitle stands out to tell you "what's in the tin". I like #1 better visually, but the subtitle gets lost.
#2 Especially if your homeboy and homedog dialogs feature throughout the book. And this is not the feedback you asked for but if they had oppositional quotes under their portraits I think that would really hit it home.
